Standards are usually characterised by a strong clear straight stem topped off with a rounded crown of foliage which is regularly clipped and snipped to maintain a formal round shape. They look good in pairs framing a door-way or gate-way or can be used to emphasize a special point of interest in the garden. If you only have a small garden standard plants are a great way to have the trees you want in a manageable size. Standards always look good in containers but equally do well in the garden.
